Jan Jamali steps down as speaker

QUETTA: Balochistan Assembly Speaker Jan Muhammad Jamali tendered his resignation on Friday owing to his differences with the PML-N leadership.

The resignation came after coalition partners decided to table a no-trust motion against the speaker. The differences between Jamali and PML-N surfaced during the recently held elections of the Upper House. Jamali had refused to vote for the PML-N’s ticket holders in the Senate’s election.

Jamali’s daughter Sana Jamali contested on a seat reserved for women, which was won by PML-N-backed Kalsoom Parveen.

Sources at Governor’s House confirmed that the resignation has been accepted.

“Acting Governor Mir Abdul Quddoos Bizenjo received handwritten resignation of speaker Mir Jan Jamali on Friday and approved it,” they said, adding that earlier, the acting governor talked to Jamali by phone.
