CASA-1000 project launched, Pakistan to get 1,000MW by 2018
DUSHANBE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Chief Executive Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah and Kyrgyzstan's Prime Minister Sooronbay Jeenbekov jointly launched the Central Asia South Asia 1000 (CASA-1000) power project.
The project was launched at an impressive ceremony near Dushanbe in Tajikistan on Thursday. The CASA-1000 is a flagship project, and the first of its kind that will link Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan through electricity grid.
Pakistan will get 1,000MW electricity from this project via Afghanistan by 2018. The project would greatly help Pakistan overcome the shortage of electricity, especially in summers.
Afghanistan will get 300MW electricity.
The project will be completed in two years with the cost of $1.17 billion.
The agreements on CASA-1000 have already been signed to implement the project and the process of laying the transmission line is underway.
Tajikistan is the world's third largest producer of hydroelectric power after the United States and Russia. Hydroelectric generation accounts for 76 percent of the total energy output of the country.
