Shah consults political leaders over CEC appointment

ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader in the National Assembly, Khursheed Shah consulted key political leaders on Thursday over the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Khursheed Shah expressed hope that a decision regarding the appointment of the CEC will be made in the next few days.

Shah added that the names of Justice (retd) Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddqui, Justice (retd) Rana Bhagwandas and Justice (retd) Ajmal Mian have been proposed for the post of Chief Election Commissioner.

The opposition leader also contacted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi. The PTI leader said his party was agreed on Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid for the post.

Shah also spoke with MQM leader Farooq Sattar, ANP Chief Asfandyar Wali Khan and FATA representative G.G. Jamal. Following this, two additional names were proposed for the CEC which included former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani and Justice (retd) Tariq Pervaiz.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the government to appoint a new CEC by November 13.
