Consensus evades PM, opp leader on CEC’s appointment
By Tanveer Ahmed

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Thursday hoped that the candidate for the post of chief election commissioner (CEC) will be finalised in the next few days.
Shah, who accused the PML-N government on Wednesday of delaying the appointment of the CEC, met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday and discussed at length the issue. Shah has apparently got into action after Supreme Court’s deadline of November 13 for appointment of the CEC draws nearer. The meeting with the prime minister was to discuss the issue, however the tow sides could not arrive on a consensus on one name. Taking to media persons after meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif regarding the issue, Shah said that he desires for consensus on this appointment soon. He said that in the meeting the government suggested Justice Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui as the CEC, but Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) did not agree with the PML-N’s suggestion. The PPP suggested Justice Ajmal Mian for the post but the PML-N refused to agree. Khurshid Shah said that the name of Justice (r) Rana Bhagwandas also came under discussion but he has refused to be appointed as CEC. He said that resolution of this matter was his priority and that he would also meet the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, and Aftab Sherpao and parliament members of other political parties to resolve it.
