No nominees of agencies in judicial commission: Dar

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said on Monday that no nominees of agencies could be included in the judicial commission.

The finance minister in a news conference stated that the judicial commission could only comprise judges.

Mr Dar’s statements regarding the judicial commission were in response to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan who had called for officials of the Inter-Services-Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) to also be part of the commission headed by the Supreme Court to investigate alleged rigging in the 2013 elections.

“The talk of including ISI and MI officials in the judicial commission is surprising,” Dar said.

Dar added that even if the government wanted to form a commission in accordance with Khan’s demands, it could not. “The court not government gives the names of judges for the judicial commission.”

According to Dar, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had already written a letter to the SC Registrar for the formation of the commission.

In his address at the Rahim Yar Khan rally on Friday, Khan said the judiciary was independent but not impartial. The PTI chairman called for an impartial person to head the commission to be decided by him and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Khans added the commission should be formed by November 30 and submit its report within four weeks. He further said if proven by the commission that rigging took place, Prime Minister Sharif would have to resign
