MQM, PPP confront over Thar crisis

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said on Monday that the government is carrying out relief work in Thar to address the current crisis while Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan stated that the situation seems otherwise.

The two major political parties, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Mutahidda Qaumi Movement, have once again come face-to-face but this time over the issue of deaths in drought-hit Tharparkar area of Sindh where dozens of children have so far lost their lives due to malnutrition.

Talking to the media outside the Sindh Assembly, the Information Minister said the report broadcast on media regarding Thar was fake. He said that the provincial health department was not under PPP for the past twenty years. He further stated that Reverse Osmosis plants have been installed in Thar for potable water.

Sharjeel Memon claimed that he would quit politics if the allegations leveled against him in the report broadcast in the media are proved correct.

Contrary to the PPP government’s claims, MQM leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan said the government is responsible if any child dies, adding that the current situation reveals that government’s claims are untrue.

He further said that the party would table adjournment motion on Thar in the Sindh Assembly.
