Donors pledge $700m for IDPs, flood victims

ISLAMABAD – Bilateral and multilateral donors have made pledges worth 700 million dollars to help support rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the flood victims in Pakistan.

The commitments were made at the donors’ conference held on Tuesday with Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Senator Ishaq Dar in the chair. The pledges have been made by the Department for International Development of Britain, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the European Union, Japan, Italy and others.

These pledges have been made in the light of recovery need assessments that estimated requirement of 1.4 billion dollars. The damage need assessment is underway and is expected to be completed next month which would lead to further pledges and assistance.

The finance minister thanked the donors for their commitments and assured that the money received would be spent in a highly transparent manner.
