ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) former spokesman Akbar S Babar has alleged that PTI misused the funds collected from overseas Pakistanis.

He said that the party was formed to curb corruption and traditional politics but unfortunately it failed to ensure transparency within itself. Talking to a television channel, Akbar said that during 2010-11, PTI had collected massive funds which were not used properly as per its manifesto. At that time, he said, he had suggested to PTI Chairman Imran Khan to conduct an audit of PTI accounts and to form an accountability commission to hold corrupt party leaders accountable.

He said that after a sit-in against corruption of the previous government he had informed Imran that PTI central officers were involved in corruption and had also submitted a detailed report in this regard. Akbar alleged instead of taking action against corrupt office-bearers, Imran ignored corruption and chose to protect and patronise the corrupt within the party by not taking any action against them.

Had the party chairman acted on corruption complaints earlier, corruption would not have been committed during the intra-party elections and the allocation of party tickets for the general election, he said. He claimed that workers who had stood by the party for years for the cause of change were increasingly becoming disappointed because there was no justice, accountability and merit within the party.

Akbar was of the view that PTI should bring transparency first within the party for real change in the society. He said that during party’s fund raising campaign abroad, PTI chairman had appealed to overseas Pakistanis to donate funds for setting up their offices in different districts of Pakistan. He said that no single district office had been established with that funding.
