ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would participate in the two-day South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit scheduled to start in Kathmandu, Nepal, on November 26.

The theme of the SAARC Summit is “Deeper Integration for Peace and Prosperity”, said Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam in a statement here on Sunday.

Pakistan attached high importance to SAARC and was committed to its process. Pakistan firmly believed that given the resources, SAARC region had the potential to become the engine for global economic growth for the 21st Century. Nepalese Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey had visited Pakistan on October 23 this year, as special envoy of the prime minister of Nepal, to extend invitation to the Prime Minister Nawaz for participation in the SAARC Summit.

The summit would be preceded by the preparatory meetings at the senior officials and ministerial level. The foreign secretary is presently in Kathmandu to represent Pakistan in the SAARC Standing Committee Meeting, followed by the SAARC Council of Ministers Meeting on November 25, which would be attended by the Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz.

On the sidelines of the event, the prime minister would meet other leaders of SAARC countries to discuss issues of bilateral and regional interest. A delegation would also accompany the prime minister to the summit.
