Deadline set for CEC appointment ends today

ISLAMABAD: The government is likely to seek more time for the appointment of the Chief Election Commission of Pakistan as Supreme Court’s deadline to fill the constitutional posts expires today (Monday).

The CEC is appointed after prime minister and the opposition leader proposes three names to the 12-member parliamentary committee after consultation.

Nawaz Sharif and Opposition Leader Khurshid Shah had met on November 6 before the latter left the country and according to sources there had not been any formal contact between the leader of the house and the leader of the opposition since then.

Sources said that telephonic contacts between the government and the opposition were ongoing but they were being kept secret to avoid any objections.
