PTI's Shafqat Mahmood quits as Lahore organiser over LG polls performance

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Shafqat Mahmood on Sunday resigned from his position as Lahore organiser after the party fared poorly in the local government elections in Punjab province the previous.

In messages posted on social media website Twitter, the PTI leader said that the party's performance in the local bodies' polls was "worse than expected".

"PTI fared much worse than expected in Lahore LG elections. We did our best but our best was not good enough," he said.

"As district incharge it is my moral duty to accept responsibility for this poor performance. I have today resigned as Lahore organiser."


According to unofficial results of over 85 percent polling stations in Punjab obtained by Geo News at the time of this report, the PTI had managed to secure only 251 seats out of 2,326 seats.

PTI's main rival party, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), was leading with 1,049 seats while independent candidates had managed to bag 912 seats.
