PM witnesses naval drill in Karachi

KARACHI - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif - on the occasion of fleet review by the Pakistan Navy - witnessed several naval maneuvers by an array of naval combat platforms in North Arabian Sea on Wednesday.

As the culminating event of the Pakistan Navy's major maritime exercise – Sea Spark 2015 - the event was aimed at showcasing the combat readiness of navy, said a statement. The naval forces demonstrated several naval warfare operations against traditional and non-traditional threats, including counterterrorism and anti-piracy drills, live weapons firings and fly past.

Earlier on his arrival on-board navy ship NASR, the prime minister was received by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah. He (Nawaz Sharif) was also given a briefing on conduct of the exercise and the navy's salient contributions towards maritime sector, coastal development and humanitarian assistance operations.

Prime Minister Nawaz reposed complete trust and confidence in the operational capabilities of the Pakistan Navy, saying the challenges at hand necessitate eternal vigilance to safeguard against external and internal threats.

Sea Spark is a biannual exercise conducted with the main objective to assess the operational readiness and provide an opportunity to the navy personnel to operate under multi-threat environment.

The event was also attended by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai, Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif and senior officers of the army, navy and the air force.
