RAWALPINDI – China deeply appreciates determination of the Pakistan Army in counterterrorism operations, China’s Central Military Commission Vice Chairman General Fan Changlong said on Thursday.

General Changlong - who is heading the high-level Chinese military delegation – expressed these views during his meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif here at the General Headquarters.

“China values the efforts of the Pakistan Army in fighting the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM),” he said. Terming the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) equally beneficial to both Pakistan and China, he said both countries were committed to its continuous process and future success.

He said efforts of the Pakistan Army in safeguarding the economic corridor project were highly appreciated. “We look forward to close cooperation with Pakistan in order to ensure proper management and security of the CPEC,” he added.

The visiting dignitary particularly expressed his appreciation of the role played by General Sharif in realising the economic corridor project and strengthening relationship between Pakistan and China.

Highlighting Pakistan-China defence and security cooperation, General Changlong said, “Pakistan and China are the best iron brothers, good friends and strategic partners. We share the tradition of mutual understanding, mutual trust and mutual support.”

General Sharif said that relations between the two countries were based on mutual trust and cooperation. “This relationship has survived the test of times and is only bound to grow,” he added.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, this is the first visit of the China’s Central Military Commission vice chairman after a lapse of 11 years. The meeting was followed by delegation-level talks.

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, regional security, steps for regional stability and enhanced bilateral defence collaboration came under discussion.

Earlier on his arrival at the General Headquarters, a smartly turned out contingent of the Army presented guard of honour to the visiting dignitary, who laid floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhuda and paid rich tribute to the martyrs of Pakistan.
