Rehabilitation sciences may bring positive changes in lifestyle

ISLAMABAD: Human rehabilitation experts have said that modern rehabilitation science education may not only bring positive changes in lifestyle, but also can improve the lives while promoting health consciousness.

Addressing Pakistan’s first-ever international conference on Rehabilitation Science Education on Saturday, experts from around the globe discussed various features and issues related to rehabilitation science education in Pakistan. The country’s first two-day international conference on Rehabilitation Science Education is being held by Isra Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences (Isra University) where a large number of international experts have gathered to create mass awareness regarding rehabilitation process and its modern science education.

The first day of conference featured many plenary sessions and a very informative panel discussion in which leading national and international rehabilitation experts including Muhammad Wassay, Sahibzada Nasir Mansoor, Raja Farhat, ArshadNawaz Malik, Mariam Hadi Syeda and Saima Kanwal participated on the topic.

In a plenary session, world’s leading rehabilitation expert Barbara Ann Parfitt from United Kingdom highlighted the team work in the rehabilitation process while Dr Sajida Naz discussed issues and challenges regarding the disability phenomenon in Pakistan. Dr Mariam Hadi Syeda, a language pathologist at the American Hospital Dubai, shared her thoughts on evidence based practice in dysphagia management. Physiotherapy development in Pakistan was discussed by Dr Haider Dorian.

DrSabahat Asim Wasti shared valuable information and research on the importance registries in research, education and service planning. Dr Nadeem Rehman discussed nutritional challenges associated with neurological disabilities. Isra Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences Principal Dr Naveed Babur shared a qualitative study regarding DPT (HEC) curriculum. Dr Amir Gillani discussed future prospects of rehabilitation sciences while Muhammad Bin Afsar Jan threw light on latest trends in neurological rehabilitation. Iqbal Khan shed light on recent surgical advances for rehabilitation of the deaf in a plenary session. A global vision for the future of rehabilitation education was presented by Furqan Ahmed Siddiqui. Muhammad Wassay discussed stroke in women - burden, challenges and future for Pakistan.

Earlier, Pakistan Science Foundation Chairman Dr Muhammad Ashraf inaugurated the conference. Addressing the inaugural session he said that the science foundation will provide grants for research in rehabilitation sciences while full cooperation will be extended by his organisation to all the organisations working in this field. International conference’s chairman and Isra Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences Principal Dr Naveed Babur said that almost 3,500 physiotherapists are working in the country but there is no accredition body is formed to combine their efforts and research.

He said that research process in rehabilitation sciences is very important and unfortunately Pakistan lacks in this field, which should be addressed by authorities and other institutions concerned.
