Reham spells out the reasons why her marriage crumbled
LONDON: Much has been said and speculated about the reasons behind Imran Khan and Reham Khan’s divorce. However while Imran Khan has demanded privacy, Rehman Khan has revealed truths that otherwise may not have seen the light of day.
In an article written by the former Mrs. Khan for a British newspaper she has blamed no one except Imran Khan and herself for the breakdown of their marriage.
She complained that from the very start the entire country was involved in her marriage and she “wasn’t aware of the extra eyes and ears inside my bedroom.”
A journalist with years of airtime under her wing Reham complained that she is as vulnerable as an uneducated woman in Pakistan facing the same risks, “any man can throw mud at you, can abuse you, can call your character into question and get away with it without having to prove anything.”
A woman who managed to survive and flourish for 10 years without a husband exposed how she felt more secure and protected but after marrying “the strongest man in the land” she faced “a barrage of abuse.”
In less than 1,200 words Rehman Khan spills her heart out her views on the worth of a wife’s love and devotion and how her 10-month marriage to Imran Khan ending has brought her back to square one at the age of 42 – she has lost faith in humanity.
She complains how people she has never met have become authorities on her character. How the “deep-rooted misogyny’ in Pakistan creates an environment in which professional females are afraid to step up into the limelight.
She writes about how when she urged women in Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to come forward and partake in active politics, they responded, “Look at what they are doing to you! We cannot tolerate the attacks you put up with.”
While Ms. Khan spells out clearly that her marriage did not fall apart because of media scrutiny, interference of Imran’s advisors nor did his family’s disapproval play any part; she does also state that a “bond that is strong can withstand any attack, rumour or pressure.”
Reham’s article in the guardian seems like a mixture of complaints, reflections and a tool for seeking closure until it comes to the end where Ms. Khan paints the picture of a woman still in love; she writes about vanishing behind the scenes so Imran’s political career was not hampered in any way and how, when that wasn’t enough, she chose a ‘graceful exit’ so Imran ‘could focus on his mission’.
