Top civil, military leadership discuss tension along LoC, Working Boundary

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday lauded the armed forces of Pakistan for successfully undertaking operation Zarb-e-Azb and clearing the area of militants.

Chairing a National Security Council meeting here at the Prime Minister’s House, he shared with the participants his experience of visit to Miranshah a day earlier that had now been cleared of militants after the successful operation Zarb-e-Azb.

In his initial remarks, the prime minister said that the two agenda items on the meeting were tension along the Line of Control and briefing on the operation Zarb-e-Azb. “It was a very moving experience for me,” he said recalling his visit to the headquarters of North Waziristan Agency. He mentioned his meeting with the officers and soldiers who were willing to undertake any sacrifice for the survival of Pakistan.

“They have fought very bravely in the area and cleared all of North Waziristan area,” he said. The prime minister said that he visited the city and had an aerial view of adjoining mountain tops that were occupied by the militants for past many years. “I am very happy to see the outcome of the operation Zarb-e-Azb, MashAllah which is progressing very successfully,” he added.

“I must compliment all officers, soldiers and all those, who lost their lives and sacrificed their lives for Pakistan, must be complemented by all of us,” Nawaz said. “We like to convey our sincerest and heartfelt condolences to their families,” he added. He said that the Pakistan Army was already taking care of their families and if there was anything that the government could do to provide them further relief and help, we would be very happy to do that.

The prime minister said that he witnessed very moving scenes yesterday. He said that the area had been cleared of all militants. He also recalled his visit to the basement of a mosque that was being used for promoting the cause of terrorism and had rooms where the young recruits were trained. There were depots of explosives and ammunition. He termed it a life-time experience that included a very detailed briefing.

The prime minister lauded the Pakistan Army for a marvellous job was done and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif under whose command the army was undertaking the operation. He also welcomed the new Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah.

The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid and Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz. The Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee chairman and the three services chiefs also attended the meeting.
