Opposition defers no-confidence move

* Fazl says decision taken after consultation with all opposition parties * KP govt utilising public resources on sit-insBy Asim Qadeer Rana ISLAMABAD: After being cold-shouldered by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Fazlur Rehman, chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, has decided to dump the no-confidence move against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Pervez Khattak. The cleric announced this after his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the PM’s House. Fazl was accompanied by Federal Minister for Housing and Works Akram Khan Durrani, Leader of Opposition in KP Assembly Lutfur Rahman and Senator Gul Naseeb Khan. KP Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique were also present. Matters related to national and political situation came under discussion during the meeting. After the meeting, Fazl announced to cancel the no-confidence move against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak. Addressing a press conference, the cleric said that the no-confidence motion had been presented after holding due consultations. The opposition parties of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were in dispute on the matter of withdrawing the no-confidence move against the CM. “Today’s decision to cancel the move has also been reached after holding deliberations,” he added. Criticising the KP government, he alleged that the provincial resources were not being utilised on the people. He also accused the KP government of wasting provincial resources on the PTI sit-ins. “No development work is visible anywhere in the province while its law and order situation also remains a cause of grave concern,” he lamented, adding that mutilated bodies were still being found in the province. He said the objective of the no confidence motion was to prevent the provincial government from dissolution, which has been met. He said he consulted the PM and other opposition parties during which the decision was taken. He said he spoke over the telephone with Khursheed Shah, Aftab Sherpao, Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Ameer Haider Khan Hoti and decided to defer the motion. Prior to that, Fazl, a close aide of Nawaz, met him and sought his permission to enhance political contacts in order to move no confidence motion against Khattak but the PM stopped him from proceeding ahead. The PM said that there were several political fronts open at the moment and no new issues should be created. Nawaz said the government would respect each party’s mandate wherever it is. The cleric had suggested Nawaz to form a coalition government by passing a no-confidence move in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. Sources said that Fazl told the PM that the disgruntled assembly members of PTI were willing to form a coalition government with the JUI-F. Earlier, Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Minister Sardar Muhammad Yousuf and Member National Assembly Capt (r) Safdar called on the PM and briefed him about the construction of Hazara Motorway. Members of National Assembly Sarzameen Khan (Kohistan), Nasir Iqbal Bosal (Mandi Bahauddin), Muhammad Arshad Khan Leghari (Rahim Yar Khan), Nazir Khan (FATA) separately called on Nawaz at his chamber in the Parliament House. They discussed infrastructure development and provision of clean drinking water in their constituencies with the PM.
