MITHI – Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Sunday said that the children died in calamity-hit Thar not because of malnutrition, but also due to unsafe water intake.

“Our government has already initiated work on the installation of a reverse osmosis (RO) plant to ensure sufficient safe water for people in Thar,” he said while speaking during his visit to review the situation of drought there.

Some 300 RO plants would have been installed by the end of this year, the chief minister said. He said that the plants would also be installed in other remote areas of Thar in 2015 as the issue of safe drinking water should be resolved forever.

He said that the government had spent Rs 2.5 billion on wheat distribution among drought-hit victims in Thar. The government was ready to distribute more wheat among them free of cost, he said. Aside from this, dispensaries have been established in the remote areas to provide medical services to people at their doorsteps, he said.

During his visit to the Civil Hospital in Mithi, he also issued directives to the health secretary to appoint doctors to cope with the shortage. Qaim said that the government was taking serious step to upgrade education sector in Thar so that modern education could be provided to the children.
