Over 350 delegates to attend Invest Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – A two-day international investment conference will start here on Monday with an aim to highlight the investment regime and opportunities for investment in various sectors of Pakistan’s economy.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Board of Investment Chairman Dr Miftah Ismail said that federal ministers would brief the participants about enormous opportunities available in Pakistan. He said the conference which was named as Invest Pakistan was scheduled to be attended by over 350 invitees including 241 foreign delegates from all continents of the world.

Besides 71 from Pakistan, so far 30 delegates from Bahrain, 44 from China (including 29 from Hong Kong), one each from Denmark, Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand and France, two each from Finland, Malaysia and Qatar, three from Italy, four each from Australia, UK and Japan, five each from US and UAE, eight from Turkey, nine from New Zealand, 13 from Saudi Arabia, 18 from South Korea and 12 from Russia have confirmed their participation in the conference.

Dr Miftah said that participation of such a large number of foreign delegates was a confidence booster for Pakistan under the prevailing circumstances. “It speaks volumes about international confidence in stability of our economy and democratic rule of law,” he said. The conference would provide an opportunity to show Pakistan's strengths as an excellent place to do business and one that is open to foreign investment, he said.

During the breakout sessions, he said that the delegates would exchange views on important areas like power sector, oil and gas, infrastructure, trade and investment, information technology and telecommunication, mining and mineral, agriculture and livestock, privatisation, financial sectors and special economic zones. The conference will provide a platform to businessmen and investors to interact with each other and explore possibility of joint ventures in various sectors.

Besides Dr Miftah, Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif, Minister for Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastagir and other senior officers from public sector and professionals from private sectors would be amongst the prominent speakers of the conference. Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Senator Ishaq Dar will give a key note address on the future of economy.

To a question, Dr Miftah said that the foreign delegates were quite satisfied with the law and order situation as not a single foreign delegate had questioned regarding the security situation in Pakistan. He said that the conference would help attract more foreign investment which would increase the economic activities in Pakistan. To another question, he said the government was offering 17 per cent return rate on investment in power sector.
