PTI lawmakers arrive at NA to verify resignations

ISLAMABAD: A deadlock persists over the verification of resignations tendered by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNAs as the deadline set by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadi has expired.

The deadlock emerged over the issue when NA Speaker Sadiq said under the constitution the verification of resignations needs to be done on an individual basis while the PTI insisted on collective verification.

The Deputy Speaker met with the PTI MNAs and explained the legal situation to them following which they requested time for consultation.

PTI MNAs including Arif Alvi, Shah Mehmood Qureshi Asad Umer and Ghullam Sarwar Khan arrived at the National Assembly for the verification process. PTI Chairman Imran Khan, MNAs Shehryar Afridi, Qiasar Jamal, Siraj Muhammad Khan, Mujahid Ali, Salimur Rehman and Junaid Akbar were not present for the verification.

Earlier, Shireen Mazari said if need Imran Khan would verify his resignation from his container publicly.

When NA staff requested Shah Mehmood Qureshi to have resignations verified one-by-one in front of the NA Speaker, the PTI Vice Chairman replied that they were not school children and the speaker should come to the lounge for the verification.

The final notice was issued by the NA Speaker on October 24 for the confirmation of resignations which said in case the concerned MNAs did not appear on Oct 29 before the speaker; their resignations will not be accepted.

In August PTI MNAs had tendered their resignations as the party was engaged in protests and sit-ins against the government over rigging during the 2013 elections.
