ISLAMABAD – Pakistan on Thursday said that all countries in South Asian region should concentrate on development instead of indulging in arms race.

“We don't want arms race – conventional or non-conventional – in the region,” said Tasnim Aslam, spokesperson for the Foreign Office, during a weekly briefing here at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Referring to reports of arms purchase by India, she said that the South Asian region was poor and therefore countries in this region should concentrate on development instead of indulging in an arms race.

A recent report pointed out that the Indian government has been pushing for greater indigenisation of the military industry as India imports around 70 per cent of its defence hardware.
