PEMRA to ban local channels airing Indian content

While the tension between India and Pakistan rises, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has announced that it will cancel the licenses of all media outlets airing Indian content.

According to media reports, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has granted Chairman Absar Alam the authority to revoke or suspend licenses of companies illegally airing Indian content without prior notice.

The decision was taken in PEMRA meeting, summoned to mull over the issue of illegal showing of foreign contents and look at the October 15 deadline, which was given on August 31 to stop all illegal showing of foreign programs without permission.

The PEMRA said in a statement that it has authorized Alam to revoke or suspend the licenses of companies airing Indian content without prior notice after end of the deadline.

Last week, Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) announced that it was imposing a ban on all Pakistani artistes working in India.

The theatre owners in Pakistan had also decided to ban screening of all Indian movies till the ongoing tense situation between the two countries becomes normal.
