‘Right to information vital for improving democracy’
Minister says lawyers’ role crucial when restoring democracy from dictators
By: PPIRAWALPINDI: Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said that the right to information is necessary to improve the nation’s democratic system.
The minister said, while addressing a seminar on ‘Right to Information’ on Tuesday that the government will get the parliament’s approval on the bill – which is ready to be tabled in the federal cabinet.
He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had promised the nation – before the general elections – to ensure this right as access to information of public offices was not available in past.
Rashid said that Punjab and KP have already adopted this right and said that the legislation should be made in all provinces. Lawyers play a vital role in restoring the democracy from dictators as the founder of Pakistan was a lawyer himself and had achieved his victories using the legal system, the minister concluded.
