PM forms committee to investigate excessive bills of electricity

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken a serious notice of excessive electricity bills sent to the consumers and has formed an investigative committee headed by Advisor to the Prime Minister for Water and Power Mussadiq Malik.

The prime minister directed that the committee should submit its report to the Cabinet by September 19. He took the decision when federal ministers protested over the excessive bills and demanded the prime minister to help resolve the difficulties of the people. According to details, the prime minister told the Cabinet that he had taken notice of excessive electricity billing and would take additional decisions in consultation with the ministers.

Sources said that Federal Ministers Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Abbas Afridi, Sardar Mohammad Yusuf and others raised the issue of heavy billings. The prime minister said that he had also received a report in this connection that higher electricity bills were sent last month and this would be investigated.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that people living in two room houses and flats were sent bills of 15,000 to 20,000 rupees which was a serious mistake on the part of meter readers and senior officials. Chaudhry Nisar said that an individual who could hardly pay a bill of five hundred rupees had been sent bill of five thousand rupees and asked how he could pay it.

He said that if investigation was held for bills of Rawalpindi district, the situation would become clear. Secretary Water and Power Nargis Sethi gave detailed answers to objections and said as there was less load shedding during the period; the bills would have gone up. She said as the prime minister had ordered, an investigation would be carried out.
