UK govt sends Pak reference against Altaf to London police
KARACHI: Islamabad on Saturday formally received a response from British government on its reference against Altaf Hussain, the self-exiled founder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
According to Geo News, the British Home Office has condemned the violence that followed Hussain’s telephonic speech in Karachi on August 22 and informed their Pakistani counterparts that the reference has been forwarded to Metropolitan Police for investigation.
Geo News correspondent in London said the police have confirmed receiving the letter from the British Home Office.
Pakistan had sent a reference against Altaf Hussain after he delivered a speech, in which he made anti-Pakistan remarks and provoked his followers to mount an attack on media houses.
The reference contained a copy of an FIR forwarded by Sindh government, containing audio tape of speech, video footage of the enraged MQM workers and CCTV footage of a TV channel which came under attack on the eventful day of August 22.
The British authorities are said to have contacted experts to translate the speech of MQM founder, which was made in Urdu language.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on August 24 Altaf Hussain’s speech was the biggest proof against him and a reference against him was being sent to Britain.
He had told media that action against Altaf Hussain will be initiated, on account of his provocative speech.
After an extremely aggressive anti-Pakistan speech of Altaf Hussain, enraged MQM workers attacked media and created a serious law and order situation.
During the violence, a passer-by was killed while several others were injured, including staff of a private TV channel and policemen.
MQM workers also set alight police vehicles and damaged public and private property. Soon after the violence, MQM leaders Farooq Sattar and Khwaja Izharul Hassan, Amir Khan, Dr Amir Liaquat and others were detained by the Rangers personnel.
Farooq Satttar, Khawaja Izhar and other MQM office-bearers had arrived at the Karachi Press Club to address a press conference where Sindh Rangers personnel took them into custody.
