MQM leader Izharul Hassan released after brief detention

KARACHI: Authorities on Friday released Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan after a brief detention that sparked a controversy.

The opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly was shifted to Karachi Police Office after SP Malir Rao Anwar arrested him in a raid at his house in Buffer Zone and detained him at a police station in Gaddap twon.

“I have to leave because my mother has suffered a heart attack. We will inform the media about the entire situation later in the night,” he told Geo News as he left Karachi Police Office after five-hour detention.

Inspector General Police AD Khawaja said the MQM leader was released under section 497-2B of Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

Earlier, Rao Anwar told media that the MQM leader could only be released after a court order is issued in this respect. He also declared Sindh government decision of his removal a hasty and wrong move.

The high profile arrest led to suspension of Rao Anwar and East Zone SP. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also telephoned Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to get cognizance of the situation in Karachi.
