Sharmeen & LeBron James Come Together for a New Documentary
By Natasha Uderani

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is one of the best things to come out of Pakistan and we all should be extremely proud of her. Sharmeen has won countless accolades including Oscars for her visually intoxicating documentaries centered on sensitive subject matters such as honor killing. Through these documentaries, she has spotlighted issues that need to be addressed, making sure that they do not get lost under the rubble of issues plaguing this country.
While Sharmeen continues to be an inspiration to millions, that’s not to say that she has not managed to gather a crowd of haters along the way. According to some people. Shareem is showcasing Pakistan in a negative light on the world stage by highlighting such issues through film. Sometimes people have the IQ of a tennis ball and say stuff that gives out the message that they are asking to be punched in the face. To those people I only have one thing to say, Stop talking.
For her new documentary, Sharmeen has partnered up with basketball legend LeBron James. The documentary titled “Student Athlete” has been directed by Trish Dalton and produced by LeBron James. The documentary, which is going to air on HBO aims to examine how amateur college level athletes are treated by the same institutions for which they generate millions of dollars in revenue.
“Unpaid college athletes generate billions of dollars for their institutions every year. Student Athlete unveils the exploitative world of high-revenue college sports through the stories of four young men at different stages of their athletic careers, as well as a coach-turned-advocate and a whistle-blowing shoe rep who exposes the money trail.”
The documentary explores the exploitation of student-athletes through the lenses of four athletes who are at different stages in their careers. It features New Jersey High School Basketball player Nick Richards, college and NFL coach John Shoop, University of Illinois and Bradley University student Mike Shaw, Baylor University player Silas Nicata and Rutgers University athlete Shamar Graves.
As you may have all seen in literally any American movie ever, student-athletes are celebrated, lauded and pushed to their very limits to bring fame and money to their place of education. While movies glamorize this by showing the scholarships they receive and the fame they get, they don’t show what these athletes are giving up.
In order to get all the source material for this movie, the filmmakers spent almost two years studying and shadowing these athletes to get a glimpse into their lives.
The documentary premiers on 2nd October at HBO Sports.
