Anila Ali, President of American Muslim & Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council (AMMWEC), issued the following statement on the Dallas synagogue attack:

“We are relieved that the crisis at the synagogue ended with all hostages safe, and we are devastated that once again a Jewish house of worship has been attacked. Jews everywhere deserve to live in safety – and Muslim community leaders must step up to help ensure these attacks stop.

“We appreciate Jewish community leaders who have urged that the synagogue attack not spark a counter-reaction of Islamophobia. The answer to hate is never hate.

“At the same time, silence is complicity – and we cannot stay silent about a climate of antisemitism tolerated by some Muslim leaders. Just as the Tree of Life Synagogue attack forced American society to confront far-right antisemitism, the Congregation Beth Israel attack requires an honest reckoning with demonization promoted by Islamist extremists.

“We sadly do not need to look far for examples. Just weeks ago, Zahra Biloo, a leader of CAIR, used a speech at a Muslim community event to attack mainstream American Jews.

“Labeling mainstream Jews as ‘enemies’ exacerbates inter-communal strife and creates the conditions for violence. Muslim leaders must insist upon zero tolerance for both overt and the thinly-veiled antisemitism – otherwise we betray our moral and religious duties. Let’s instead say the truth: the Jewish people are wonderful allies of Muslims. Shalom and Salaam!”

In a later message, AMMWEC extended an invitation to “our virtual Vigil on Friday, January 21st at 3 PM EST to CONDEMN the recent Beth Israel Synagogue attack.
“Muslim and multifaith leaders will come together to condemn this attack as well as all actions of violence and extremism.
“Some extremist leaders argue that Muslims and Jews are "enemies" - dangerous rhetoric that demonizes, divides, and incites violence. After Saturday's synagogue attack, the responsible mainstream can be silent no longer. We come together as allies and friends, to celebrate what unites us and to stand against hate. We will no longer silently tolerate incitement under the guise of political differences or the celebration of hateful extremists as supposed civil rights heroes. Mainstream Muslims and Jews know that a new era of peaceful coexistence can be ours if we stand up to extremism and stand up for our shared values.
“We hope you can join us for a pre-Shabbath- jummah prayer! You can register here .
“Warm Wishes,
Anila Ali
President, AMMWEC
