Washington: “Your success is a source of pride for Pakistan, and it is celebrated in both Pakistan and the United States,” Masood Khan, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, told the newly elected mayor of Mt Laurel, New Jersey, Fauzia Janjua in a virtual meeting. “You are a bridgebuilder between two nations. Your election signifies the growing diversity in American political leadership and the increasing integration of diverse cultures into the fabric of American politics.

Ms Janjua, an American of Pakistani descent, is the first Muslim woman – and the first Democrat in 36 years – to hold this position. With roots in Chakwal, Punjab, Pakistan, she has a strong commitment to community service, particularly in the areas of education for underprivileged children and prisoners.

Describing her election as a moment of pride, Mayor Janjua noted her story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the power of an individual to make a positive impact on communities.

“I take deep pride in my Pakistani roots and heritage and my achievement is a commitment to foster inclusivity and diversity between cultures,” she said.

While recalling her political journey, Janjua emphasized her passion for community service, focusing on teaching prisoners and underprivileged children before becoming actively involved in politics.

“In a divided world, I wanted to create a united community that promotes understanding and appreciation, contributing to the diverse tapestry of Mt Laurel’s community,” she added.

Highlighting the role of Pakistani Americans in American politics, Ambassador Khan pointed out that “Pakistani Americans are making a massive contribution to the social, economic, and political landscape of the United States. There are currently 10 Assembly members in different states who are making a difference to the United States and Pakistan alike.”

To the delight of Mayor Janjua, the ambassador also proposed establishing a sister-city partnership between Chakwal in Pakistan with Mt Laurel, New Jersey.

Speaking fluent Urdu, the mayor voiced her deep admiration for Pakistani culture, music, dramas, and cuisine.

Focusing on economic cooperation between Pakistan and the United States, Ambassador Khan invited Mayor Janjua to visit Pakistan together with businessmen and entrepreneurs from her constituency and connect them with their counterparts in Pakistan.

“You can build trade and economic bridges between Pakistan and the United States as there is a huge potential of bilateral investment between the two countries,” he said.

Thanking the people of Pakistan for celebrating her achievements, Mayor Janjua expressed her desire to visit Pakistan soon with her sons who also are excited to experience Pakistan’s culture and magnificent landscape.
