Prominent Urdu poet Munawwar Rana, whose unparalleled contributions to Urdu literature enriched the cultural tapestry of India, passed away on Sunday, 14 th January 2024 at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow. Confirming his demise, his daughter Somaiyya Rana shared the sorrowful news.

Born on November 26, 1952, in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, Munawwar Rana gained widespread acclaim for his profound impact on Urdu poetry, particularly within the realm of ghazals. His distinctive style, characterized by the infusion of Hindi and Awadhi words, deviating from the conventional Persian and Arabic influences, resonated deeply with audiences across India, showcasing his accessibility and cultural relevance.

Among his celebrated works, the poignant poem 'Maa' stands as a testament to Rana's literary prowess, beautifully extolling the virtues of motherhood in the traditional ghazal form. His achievements were recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poetry book 'Shahdaba.' However, in a poignant gesture, he returned the award a year later, citing concerns about the growing intolerance in the country.

Munawwar Rana's literary journey was adorned with honors such as the Ameer Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr Zakir Hussain Award, and the Saraswati Samaj Award. His emotionally rich works have been translated into multiple languages, expanding his literary influence globally.

In his final days, Rana battled prolonged illness, receiving treatment at PGI Hospital for kidney and heart-related ailments

Rana was a prominent figure in mushairas (poetic symposiums) both in India and abroad. Beyond his literary pursuits, he actively participated in political developments in Uttar Pradesh. His daughter, Sumaiya, continues his legacy as a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav.

In his final days, Rana battled prolonged illness, receiving treatment at PGI Hospital for kidney and heart-related ailments. He peacefully passed away on Sunday night, leaving behind his wife, four daughters, and a son. His legacy lives on through the cherished verses that encapsulate the complexities of life, making a significant impact on Indian literature.

Numerous poets expressed their sorrow upon learning of Munawwar Rana's passing. Poet Sanjay Mishra Shauq remarked, "His contributions to Urdu poetry continue to resonate, leaving an enduring legacy in the literary world." The profound impact of Rana's verses, exploring life, love, and society, was echoed by poet Sarvesh Asthana, who highlighted Rana's unique use of Hindi or Hindustani words in his poetry, making it resonate with the masses despite controversies.

As we reflect on Munawwar Rana's life and works, his enduring legacy inspires future generations to explore the richness of language and the depth of human experience through the written word. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling Munawwar Rana the country's renowned poet and offering heartfelt tributes.

Reflecting on the unique bond between Munawwar Rana and our family, his eloquence shone through during a poignant ceremony at the Lucknow Press Club in 2017. This event was dedicated to the felicitation of my uncle, Shafaat Ali with a Life-Time Achievement Award, Munawwar Rana went above and beyond, making a special effort to attend the ceremony—a testament to his profound respect for my uncle, who had introduced the esteemed poet at the All-India Radio Station in Lucknow.

Despite undergoing medical treatment at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and being confined to a wheelchair, Munawwar Rana journeyed to Lucknow to pay his respects to my uncle. His presence, despite the challenges, exemplified the depth of their connection and the genuine regard he held for my late uncle.

Rana's steadfast commitment, even in the face of health challenges, serves as a powerful testament to the unwavering dedication that earned him profound respect and admiration from his contemporaries. His enduring legacy has left an indelible mark on the literary landscape, showcasing the impact of his contributions to the world of literature.
